Scrophulariaceae

222 genera, 18 with aquatic species. Annual or perrenial. Leaves opposite or whorled. Flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic, when zogomorphic usually 2-lipped. Sepals tubular with 3-5 lobes. Stamens 4, 2 or rarely 5, staminodes sometimes present; anthers 2-locular, opening by 1 continuous slit. Ovary superior of 2 united carpels with horizontal septum; ovules axile; fruit a capsule; seeds usually numerous with fleshy endosperm.

In this family it is very difficult to draw the line between true aquatics and plants that may tolerate short periods of submergence following sudden rains or floods. The following genera although recorded as being collected in water have been excluded as I can find no evidence that they grow or can persist in water: Artanema, Buchnera, Calceolaria, Conobia, Mecardonia, Micargeria, Scoparia, Stemodia and Striga.
