11 genera all aquatic. Annual or perennial. Juvenile leaves not differentiated into petiole and blade, usually linear and submerged; adult leaves occasionally linear but usually with petiole and blade. Inflorescences usually compound or rarely simple, of whorls of branches, rarely umbel-like or with solitary flowers. Flowers actinomorphic, bisexual or unisexual. Sepals 3, free. Petals 3, free, caducous or rarely absent. Stamens 3, 6, 9 or more. Carpels superior, free or united at the base, 3 to numerous, in 1 whorl or spiral; fruit a head of nutlets or in Damsonium dehiscent follicles.
