85 genera, 1 with aquatics. Perennial herbs with tunicated bulbous rootstocks. Leaves basal linear, flat or terete. Inflorescence an umbel subtended by a thick involucre which splits into 2 spathes. Perianth showy, pink to white, inserted above the ovary, tubular at base, divided into 6 segments above, withourt a corona. Stamens 6, inserted at the mouth of the tube opposite the segments; filaments free to the base; anthers versatile. Ovary inferior, sessile or subsessile, 3-locular; ovules few.

Bulb-geophytes, leaves submerged or emergent: entomophilous: diaspores probably seeds, perhaps also bulbils: cultivated in aquaria for decorativ purposes.
