Perennial or rarely annual. Stems rhizomatous or erect and leafy. Leaves floating or submerged, palmately veined, either all pelate, undivided, floating and alternate, or palmately dissected to the base, submerged and whorled or opposite. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, solitary on long axillary pedicels, all parts hypogynous and free. Sepals 3-4. Petals 3-4, white, yellow or purple. Stamens 3-36; pollen 1-sulcate. Carpels 1-18; ovules 1-3; stigmas terminal; fruit indehiscent.
