Annual or perennial. Leaves alternate, without stipules. Inflorescence a simple or branched raceme. Flowers bilaterally symmetrical, hypogynous. Sepals 4, free, in 2 decussate pairs. Petals absent or 4, free, alternating with the sepals. Stamens 6 or rarely 4. Ovary of 2 united carpels with parital placentas, 2-locular through the formation of a membranous false septum; fruit a dehiscent capsule opening by 2 valves.
